Last week we talked about the code. The early programming. The introduction that was written before you had a say in it.


This week we go one level deeper.


Because here's what most people miss: identity isn't just something that happened to you. It's something you've been actively maintaining. Every day. Without realizing it.


Your brain is incredibly loyal to the version of you it already knows. It filters information, selects memories, and shapes decisions all in service of staying consistent with who it believes you are. Not who you want to be. Who it already decided you are.


That's not a flaw. That's a feature. It kept you safe.


But at some point, safe and stuck start to look a lot alike.


The behaviors you want to change? They're not the problem. They're just outputs. You can white-knuckle your way through changing a habit, a pattern, a reaction, but if the identity underneath stays the same, the old behavior always finds a way back. Because identity is the source code. Everything else is just the application running on top of it.


So what do you actually do with that?


Start by getting curious, not critical.


When a behavior shows up that you don't like, instead of asking "why do I keep doing this," ask "who is the person who does this?" Not as a judgment. As a genuine question. Because that behavior made sense to someone at some point. It was a solution before it became a problem.


Notice what you're defending.


Pay attention to where you get reactive. Where you over-explain. Where you shut down. Those are the places where old identity is protecting itself. You're not just having a reaction. You're guarding a belief about who you are.


Run a small experiment.


You don't rewrite identity through insight alone. You rewrite it through action. Pick one small thing this week that the current version of you wouldn't normally do, but the version you're becoming would. It doesn't have to be big. It just has to be intentional. Do it, and notice how it feels. That slight discomfort? That's the gap between who you've been and who you're becoming.


Identity shifts happen in moments, not months. But only if you're paying attention.


The old code will keep running until you decide to write new lines.
