Burnout is one of the most common struggles of any working professional. It doesn’t matter how passionate you are about your career, it is bound to show up at some point in your journey. But what is “burnout”? How do you cope with it? How can you recover from burnout? How can you recharge your batteries?

The first step is to recognize what emotions are popping up for you. At its core, burn out usually centered around wanting to control the uncontrollable.

Are you feeling frustrated or disappointed because your expectations are not being met? Have you placed those expectations on others without them knowing it?

When expectations aren’t being met it’s important to ask ourselves how we can take responsibility for the situation, even if we are not responsible for it.

While we cannot control other people or usually our circumstances, we can control how we lead ourselves each day. How we lead our days is ultimately how we lead our life.

Are you setting your day up to win? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Did I set today's schedule last night?

  • Did I get good sleep and did I eat balanced meals?

  • Did I avoid my phone for the first hour of the day?

  • Did I meditate and the things that have been troubling me?

  • Did I schedule my exercise?

  • Have I taken at least sixty seconds to transition between conversations today?

  • Do I have a clear action list of things that I want to accomplish, no matter what's going on outside of my control?

When we feel out of control, we must remember that we can only control our controls. When we focus on what we can control instead of what we can’t control, we can overcome burnout.
